AI search optimization for car dealershipsBuyers now ask AIwhich dealer to visit.Be the one it names.

A buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google which dealer to visit. The answer names two or three stores. If yours is not one of them, that buyer never sees your name. Our job is to get your store named, and to show the result where you already look: leads in your GA4.

First, in plain terms.

Three words do all the work on this page. If you have never had to think about AI search, these are the only ones you need.

AI search
A buyer types a question into ChatGPT, Gemini or Google and gets a written answer back instead of a list of blue links. The answer usually names two or three dealerships and stops there.
Cited
The AI used one of your pages to write its answer and links to it as the source. Useful, but the buyer may never see your name.
Named
Your dealership's name is written into the answer the buyer reads. This is the one that matters, because it is the only part the buyer sees.

Two labels you will hear in sales pitches: AEO is the work of getting cited. GEO is the work of getting named.

What gets a dealership cited by AI?We measured it.

Nobody had published which dealership pages AI engines cite, so we ran the study: the best-reviewed franchise dealer for each brand in each state, asked about across Google AI Overview, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini.

27×

An answer page is 27 times more likely to be cited than a vehicle listing.

21.1% of a dealership's answer pages were cited by an AI engine, against 0.8% of its inventory pages. Answer pages are guides, comparisons and FAQs; the study calls them editorial pages. Inventory is about three quarters of a typical dealer website.

89%

The same is true store by store, not only in the average.

Of the 328 dealerships publishing at least ten pages of each type, 291 had a higher citation rate on answer pages than on inventory.

1 of 5

Only one of the five things we tested predicted citation: how many answer pages a store publishes.

Technical readiness, Google star rating, review volume and website platform predicted nothing. 97.9% of the stores we audited already pass the technical checks, so passing them cannot explain who gets cited. The link with answer pages was moderate: a correlation of +0.36.

98% / 6%

Being used as a source and being named are different outcomes.

Google AI Overview cites a source in 98% of answers where a dealership appears, and names the dealership in 6%. Gemini does close to the reverse: 61% cited, 51% named. One blended score hides which you are getting.

The study measures association, not causation, and the sample is review leaders by design (median 4.7 stars). The method, the confidence intervals and three withdrawn findings are published with it.

What are AEO and GEO for car dealerships?

They are names for what good SEO earns in AI search, not separate products. Google says as much: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is writing your pages so an AI engine can use them as the source of its answer. When Google's AI Overview answers "what happens at the end of a Honda lease?" and links to your page, that is AEO working.

AEO in the glossary

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is getting your dealership named in the answer a buyer reads. When a shopper asks Gemini or ChatGPT which Toyota dealer to trust and the reply says your store's name, that is GEO working.

How the three fit together

SEO is the foundation. AEO and GEO are built on it.

Pick a floor to see what it earns, what it takes and how we measure it.

The foundation · Search Engine Optimization

Found, indexed and ranking in Google for the models, services and towns you sell in.

What it takes

  • Pages Google can crawl and index, with no technical blockers
  • A page for every model, trim and town that matters to the store
  • Local signals that match your Google Business Profile

How we measure it

Impressions and top-ten positions in Search Console, and organic leads verified in GA4.

01

AI reads the same pages your buyers read

An assistant cannot quote a page it cannot reach, and Google cannot quote an answer nobody wrote down.

02

One page does all three jobs

Answer the question first, give facts a reader can check, name the models and the town. A page written that way works for SEO, AEO and GEO at once.

The order matters. Every A3 Brands program starts at the foundation and builds up.

Six mistakes dealers make buying AI search optimization.

Each of these is something our own study argues against, including things agencies like ours sell.

  1. 01

Buying AEO and GEO as a bolt-on

Ask any agency how it handles the SEO underneath before it sells you AEO or GEO. If your pages are not found and ranking, AI has nothing of yours to quote.

  2. 02

Paying for a technical audit as the fix

Almost every dealership already passes the technical checks for Google's AI features. Passing them is maintenance. It did not predict who gets cited.

  3. 03

Expecting inventory pages to get cited

Vehicle listings are most of a dealer website and are almost never cited. Keep them fast and accurate for the buyer who is ready to act. Visibility comes from answer pages.

  4. 04

Reading one blended AI score as the whole picture

A footnote on Google and your name written by Gemini are different results. Ask for cited and named separately, engine by engine, and compared with your competitors.

  5. 05

Tracking AI with a handful of prompts

Five prompts swing wildly from month to month. AI visibility needs a large, fixed set of buyer questions, asked the same way every month.

  6. 06

Flooding the site with generated pages

Volume tracked with citation, so plenty of people will pull that lever with machine-written pages. Google's guidance is to publish what others couldn't. Publish more, and publish what only your store could have written.

AI search optimization FAQ

What is AI search optimization for car dealerships?

AI search optimization is the work of getting a dealership cited and named in the answers AI engines give car buyers: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It combines AEO (being used as the source of an answer) and GEO (being named in the answer), and both are built on pages that are already found and ranking in Google.

What gets a dealership cited by AI?

Publishing answers to the questions buyers ask before they shop. In the A3 Brands Dealership AI Search Study of 661 US franchise dealerships, an answer page was 27 times more likely to be cited by an AI engine than a vehicle listing: 21.1% of answer pages were cited, against 0.8% of inventory pages. How many answer pages a store published was the only thing that predicted citation. Technical readiness, star rating, review volume and website platform did not.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO is about being cited: the engine uses your page as a source, often as a footnote or link. GEO is about being named: your dealership's name appears in the text the buyer reads. The engines treat the two very differently. In the A3 Brands study, Google AI Overview cited a source in 98% of answers where a dealership appeared and named the dealership in 6%. Gemini cited in 61% and named in 51%. That is why we count them separately.

Is AI SEO or ChatGPT SEO different from AEO and GEO?

No. AI SEO, ChatGPT SEO, AEO and GEO are different names for the same work: getting a car dealership cited and named in AI answers. Agencies use whichever label sells. What matters is whether the work produces answer pages that rank, because those are the pages AI engines cite.

We already do SEO. Do we still need AEO and GEO?

Your SEO is where they start. What changes is which pages do the work: pages that answer buyer questions get cited, and inventory pages almost never do. A store can rank well for its inventory and still be missing from AI answers because it never published the answers.

Do Google reviews help a dealership get cited by AI?

Not in our study. Neither star rating nor review volume predicted citation. Two cautions: the sample was review leaders (median 4.7 stars), so this says nothing about low-rated stores, and reviews still decide which of two named dealerships a buyer picks.

Do we need llms.txt or special schema to appear in AI answers?

Not for Google. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear in its AI features. Structured data is still worth having for rich results, and other AI systems may read llms.txt, but neither is what gets a dealership cited.

How long does AI search optimization take?

Months, not days. Engines cite pages that are already indexed and ranking, so the timeline follows your SEO: technical fixes take effect as pages are recrawled, and citations build as answer pages are published and start to rank. We report cited and named counts every month so you can see the movement.

What does AI search optimization cost for a dealership?

A3 Brands' programs start at $2,499 per month, with no setup fees and no long-term contract. SEO, AEO and GEO are one program, because they are one body of work.

Which AI platforms do you track?

Google AI Overview, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
